Our Story

The Friends of the North Las Vegas Library District (Friends) is a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization with the sole purpose of supporting the programs and services of the North Las Vegas Library District (NLVLD). It may sound surprising to some, but there are many people who are unclear about what the modern library has to offer, and about how the Friends offer support.

The public library has come a long way from the manual card catalog days. The modern library is a vibrant community education center that offers workforce training, literacy classes, free public computer access, community meeting rooms, and of course books. With tight budgets and minimal staffing NLVLD is dependent on the Friends for dedicated volunteers, as well as financial support.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Friends, including monetary and in-kind donations and grants, close to $230,000 has been raised to-date which has helped dramatically improve programs, services, and technology within the library branches.  These improvements include:

 

• Sponsoring the Summer and Winter Reading Programs.

• Purchasing self-check stations and security gates at all three library branches ($70,000).

• Youth S.T.E.M. programming.

• 1,000 books before Kindergarten early literacy program.

• Budget support for library supplies and branch upkeep.

• Purchase of new public access computers.

 

The Friends have also contributed countless hours of volunteer support to the library staff.  However, as the community grows the needs of the NLVLD will also increase to continue the success of current programs, procure additional programs and services to support the community as needed, improve existing library branches and build additional library branches ensuring that everyone in the community has easy access to the public library.  There is more good work to be done and we want you to join us in our mission and become a Friend!
